The Breed
The Hungarian Wire-Haired Vizsla is a gundog in the sub-group known as
the Hunt, Point, Retrievers Compared to many other breeds within the UK, the HWV is still a relatively new breed and therefore, unfortunately, the correct colour, coat, confirmation and movement is not always produced on a consistent basis. This will hopefully improve with correct breeding patterns. The health of the HWV can be classified as no better or worse than many other gundogs, loss of dogs with cancer, minor ear and eye problems, bloat and gastric torsion, hip displaysia, fitting and endocrine diseases (under/over active thyroid and adrenal) have all been seen in HWV. Do not be alarmed by this list - most other breeds will have the same list and with a large number of breeds will have a far longer list! Some of these problems have only been witnessed as a single occurrence hopefully that single instance will be the only occasion but it is better to be aware than not!
